Hello, My name is Lena and I'm a recently graduated college student from the U.S. My friend George and I are travelling the trans-siberian railway this winter. We were supposed to go to Ulan Bataar but then spontaneously changed plans and just bought tickets to go to Harbin after we heard about the winter festival. alas we're now in a computer lab searching for hostels in Harbin with no luck...looks like the winter festival is more popular than we thought. your website popped up while searching the internet for info on Harbin. thought I'd post a comment just in the hope that maybe you could give us some tips on places we could stay. we'd appreciate anything you can tell us....thank you very much!!!

Katie-ah....CET is a great program for learning Chinese....I went for the Winter-Spring term so I am not sure what difference there might be with the summer...but I learned in one term at CET more then 2 years studying in the US...plus as you know Harbin is a fun place if you are "into" China. The director when I was there is now like second in charge of all of CET and also i studied Chinese in Dalian with the program director of the Beijing program so I could put you in contact with her if you need some more info

Laosan, no I wasn't in CET- I was in "teaching" at the same school Brendan is last year. I'm partially responsible for getting him into the whole Harbin mess. He shoulda never listened to me...

I am thinking about applying for the CET program in Harbin for the summer term. Did you like the program.

*sniffle*

Lifang Wu Huayuanr, how I miss you. How I miss the Chinese being suprised that a foreigner lived there. How I miss being completely wasted, uttering those 5 words, and being magically driven there without incident.

Anyway, yeah. You just made me miss Harbin. That's kind of creepy. Hopefully I'll be back in June, CET be damned.

Dude,
I am so with you....it seems like the majority of China Blogs are out of Beijing, the Shanghai-Hangzhuo area or south China and few(very few)are from the Dongbei.....I spent a long time in Harbin at HaGongDa and much more time in Dalian (down the tracks by 20 or so hours.) In my mind the Dongbei IS real China...at least modern China in that you still can find the traditional (circa 1949 and after) and the modern (circa TODAY) right there...right now. To me this is the ultimate definaition of contemporary China. Besides where else in China can you get real basibijilin..........mmmmmmmmmmmmmm, good.

Brendan, do you realize you've kept us in suspense for 2 months for this post?? :)

Speaking of "real China," I always thought that Beijing was definitely a part of it. Around here, it's Shanghai that is clearly NOT "real China." Way too modern. Speaking of modern, I've heard Harbin is pretty modern. Maybe HARBIN IS NOT THE REAL CHINA!
